Home Care FAQs Michigan

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Michigan Home Help Program?

The Michigan Home Help Program is a Medicaid-funded service that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) manages. It helps seniors and individuals with disabilities live independently in their own homes instead of moving to a nursing facility.

Who is eligible for these services?

To qualify for the Home Help Program through KRSNA Home Care, you must meet the following requirements:

  • First, you must be enrolled in Michigan Medicaid.
  • Additionally, you must need hands-on assistance with at least one Activity of Daily Living (ADL), such as bathing, dressing, or mobility.
  • Finally, you must live in your own home or a private apartment (not in a nursing home or AFC facility).
Can a family member be my paid caregiver?

Yes, Michigan’s program allows you to choose your own caregiver. For example, you can select an adult child, relative, friend, or even a neighbor.

However, state law does not allow a spouse or the parent of a minor child to serve as a paid caregiver under this program.

How much does the program cost me?

If you already qualify for Medicaid, you typically pay nothing for Home Help services. Instead, the state pays KRSNA Home Care directly for the hours your Adult Services Worker (ASW) approves.

How do I apply?

To begin, you need to complete an application (DHS-390) and submit a medical certification form (DHS-54A) from your doctor.

In addition, KRSNA Home Care can guide you through each step. We help you complete the forms correctly so you can avoid delays and improve your chances of approval.

How are the care hours determined?

An MDHHS Adult Services Worker will visit your home and conduct a “Time and Task” assessment. During this visit, they evaluate your physical needs and determine how many care hours you will receive each month.

Does KRSNA Home Care provide vegetarian or traditional meals?

Yes, we provide culturally sensitive care tailored to your preferences. For instance, our caregivers can prepare traditional vegetarian (Sattvic) meals as well as Indian regional dishes.

What is Electronic Visit Verification (EVV)?

Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) is a federal requirement that ensures caregivers provide services at the correct time and location.

To make this process simple, our caregivers use a smartphone app to clock in and out. As a result, this system ensures full transparency and accountability for your care.
